Compared to other teenagers living in other regions of the country, teens among the south experienced the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancies. The study was released last week.
The researchers at Auburn University at Montgomery’s Center for Demographic Research found that rates in the south for teens pregnancy and chlamydia/gonorrhea were the highest among other regions in the United States.
The southern area of the US has a much more diverse population and lower average incomes than other regions. These 2 factors usually correlate with the studies findings.
Continuing to get schools to improve sexual health education is important to lowering rates of STDs and pregnancy. Abstinence-only education is hopefully going away.
